DECATHLON sporting store recently opened the doors of its first megastore in South Africa.

On September 2, Decathlon officially opened its store at Mall at Newmarket to the public.

COURIER got the opportunity to visit the impressive store at a pre-launch held on September 1 where role players gave speeches and a few selected people were allowed the chance to see the massive store first-hand and even to purchase goods.

NOTHING BUT NET: The courts are already utilised by the public at the grand opening.

The brand new 2 500m² concept store stocks products for more than 50 different sporting codes and the 600m² playground offers users the opportunity to test products or to simply enjoy playing sport with friends and family.

The opening weekend saw in excess of 10 000 people experiencing Decathlon in South Africa for the first time. Visitors enjoyed the wide range of sports products on offer as well as the technical knowledge of the energetic staff members from the different sports sections in the store.

The playground proved to be very popular, with children enjoying an array of different sporting activities over the course of the weekend.

IT’S OFFICIAL: Everyone’s having a good time at the pre-opening.

Horse riding, wall climbing, basketball, archery, table tennis and soccer were some of the items on the sports menu for the weekend.

“Decathlon Alberton aims to put their fully equipped 600m² playground to good use by hosting regular sporting events as well as offering locals the opportunity to explore new sports and to enjoy it with their friends,” says Japie Kruger, Decathlon’s communications leader.

Matthias Valkeniers, real estate and development manager for Decathlon South Africa, describes Mall at Newmarket as a “real value destination shopping area”. Alberton has been chosen to showcase the first standard store as it is centrally located. It also serves the entire spectrum of the larger South African demographic and is representative of the entire South Africa. Decathlon, with its low price and high-quality sports products, will be very welcome in Alberton and satisfy the needs of all in the broader catchment area.

LISTENING INTENTLY: Attendees at the pre-opening listen to speeches.

Decathlon is a sports retail brand founded back in 1976 in Lille, France and boasts more than 1 200 standard stores in more than 30 countries across the globe.
