Community demands answers on crime

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: A Sanco member demands change.

A march against crime took place in the south of Johannesburg recently, during which a memorandum of demands was handed over to Booysens Police Station.

Zone 11 ANC chairperson Nkululeko Buthelezi said the purpose of the march was to submit a memorandum of demands to the Booysens Police Station commander.

Buthelezi said the memorandum highlighted the shocking crime statistics in wards 23, 54, 55, 56, 57, 124 and 125.

“This was a march against crime,” he said, adding that residents demanded visible policing, including faster response times to crimes.

“The growing statistics of crime in the area is unsettling,” he said, adding that the police needed to understand their role in the communities they served.

“Police need to understand that they are put in a position to serve, and not one to merely be employed.”

Buthelezi said officers needed to be fit as the community depended on them for armed response. “We cannot have a situation where the criminals are constantly outsmarting our law enforcement.”

He said the memorandum was received by the Booysens police.

Booysens police spokesperson Captain Lorrain van Emmerik confirmed that the memorandum was received by the station commander, Terre’Blanche.

She said there were about 60 people involved in what was a peaceful march.
