THIS year’s City of Johannesburg (CoJ) bursary applications opened on September 25 and will close on October 12. The CoJ is committed to providing skills development opportunities, not only for its employees but also for the youth of Johannesburg.
This commitment is supported by the CoJ’s approved training and development policy, which makes provision for a bursary scheme as a strategic mechanism to help learners who intend to pursue academic studies at recognised tertiary institutions in South Africa.
The scheme funds undergraduate studies to the amount of R25 000 a year.
The CoJ understands and fully appreciates the challenges young people face when they want to enrol for a degree or diploma at institutions of higher learning.
This is compounded by high rates of unemployment in the country as a whole. Many of the residents, especially the youth, have to bear this on a daily basis. On their part, the CoJ is offering 100 bursaries for the 2019 academic year.
This will help the youth to upgrade their skills and improve their prospects for employment. While these spaces are limited, the CoJ encourages every young person to apply.
Forms can be collected from the metro centre in Braamfontein, downloaded from the CoJ’s website (www.joburg.org.za), Facebook/Twitter pages and the University of Johannesburg portal.
Preference will be given to South African citizens who permanently reside in Johannesburg and intend to pursue full-time undergraduate studies in one of the following fields: sciences, finance, engineering and management.
The key criteria governing the award of the CoJ bursary include:
• academic merit,
• confirmation of residence in Johannesburg, and
• financial need.
